Top 10 Craft Fair Secrets

The 25th Annual Craft Fair is coming up this weekend and we've ordered up some great weather for the occasion! Skies are predicted to be clear with temperatures in the low 80's ... perfect for getting outdoors to enjoy this fantastic festival.

I've resurrected some tips below from the Art Festival earlier this year and have one more tip to add ... bring your holiday shopping list!

Top 10 Festival Tips

  1. Arrive Early! During the Craft Fair this past October, I took my dog for a walk around 9:00 a.m. and the crowds were not yet bumping shoulders in the streets. Getting here that early provides you with ample time to find excellent parking, grab a cup of coffee and meander the streets as the vendors tidy up any last minute details before the official start time at 10:00. You'll also be able to get a much better view of the artwork if you are in a more serious buying mood.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes. There is a lot to see spread out all throughout the town. And, if you've never been here before we do have quite a bit of an incline on some of our streets. They don't call us "Mount" Dora for nothing.
  3. Bring some canvas shopping bags. If you got bags on wheels, even better. As you make your purchases, you'll be thankful that you have something to carry them all in. There is a great little store on Donnelly called Whispering Winds that sells expandable market bags. What I love about these is that you can bunch them up into a ball and throw them in your purse ... but they expand big enough to hold about four beach towels.
  4. Bring a bottled water and a snack. We do have some great restaurants and coffee shops downtown, however the crowds will get big around lunchtime. The food will definitely be worth the wait. But if you plan on making a day of this event then you'll be happy you have a little something to hold you over.
  5. Don't forget your sunglasses. I've done this one before. It's kind of annoying to have to squint and cup your hands over your eyes to see anything. Even better ... wear a hat.
  6. Wear sunscreen. Even though you will probable slip into some shops and restaurants downtown, most of the festival is outdoors.
  7. Do not bring your pets. Only dogs used for medical purposes will be permitted. Otherwise, you'll get all the way here and be turned away at the barricades.
  8. Bring cash or your check book. There are usually some art vendors that accept credit cards ... but you don't want to test your luck. There is a walk-up ATM at the Bank of America on the corner of Alexander & 5th in case you forget.
  9. If you want to wheel-n-deal it is better to come later in the afternoon on Sunday.
  10. Most importantly ... HAVE FUN! This is a fantastic event with over 285 artists from around the world. And this time of year should bestow great weather for the weekend.

Top 10 Theme Park Survival Essentials

Mount Dora is so close to all the action in Orlando ... and thankfully it feels a world away! But when you have a hankerin for some hustle & bustle, speed, adventure & thrills ... no one does it better than our World class theme parks such as SeaWorld, Universal Studios & Disney.

We recently had family in town from North Carolina and became a tourist for a day with them at SeaWorld Orlando. This is probably one of my favorite parks because of how much I love animals.

With all of the theme parks, there is so much to see and do that you might feel a little sensory overload. Growing up around Orlando I've gone to the parks more times than I can count and over the years I've learned a few things that have made exploring these attractions more fun.

Here are my Top 10 Theme Park Survival Essentials

1) Comfortable Shoes -- Do not underestimate the value of comfortable shoes. It never ceases to amaze me to see fashionistas wearing heels or dressy shoes at a theme park. Believe me when I say there is not going to be anything attractive or trendy about the blisters on your feet at the end of the day. Over the course of a day at the parks you can walk on average 8 to 10 miles. Cozy sneakers are best. Your toes will thank you!

2) Backpack -- Pack it with all your Theme Park Survival Essentials. I have some suggestions for these continuing in the list below.

3) H2O -- You can never get enough this one. However, instead of weighing yourself down with a 6 pack of Zephyrhills, bring a durable bottle that you can refill as you go. Not only is this "green" for the environment, but it's also greener for your wallet. For those that still want to lug around a 6 pack of water, I was delighted that SeaWorld had added recycling bins for aluminum and plastics since I last visited. Some parks will have vendors that sell big collectible mugs that you can buy and then refill throughout the day and save yourself more moolah.

3) Poncho -- This is not just for the rain. There is usually a ride in every park that will soak you to the bone. And while it might feel refreshing at first, you'll soon be cranky in those wet drawers. You might also want to bring a set of flip flops. Having wet feet all day is no fun. See item #1.

4) Hat & Sunglasses -- Inevitably, these are always the things you think about when you're a couple miles down the road and yell, "Doh! I forgot my (fill-in-the-blank). When you're outside all day in the Florida sun, your eyes will be thankful you brought these.

5) Sunscreen -- You may think that you'll be able to dodge the rays and find bits of shelter and shade, but don't risk it.

6) Snacks -- A protein bar, some granola, an apple, some cheerios. Any little bit that will give you the energy fix you need. All the parks have a wide selection of restaurants and eateries, but you'll be grateful that you had a little something stashed away for yourself when the lines are long and your stomach is growling louder than the shows.

7) Hand Sanitizer -- Wet wipes, purrell gel, etc. I even found these cool towelettes by Giovanni that are scented with an organic essential oils such as grapefruit and lavender and they're biodegradable to boot! More green goodness!

8) Camera -- This seems like a given. But I want to remind you to also pack extra film or a memory card, batteries, and a plastic zip lock bag to protect it from getting soaked in a splash zone or river rapids ride and, of course, the crushed cheerio crumbs dusting bottom of your bag by the end of the day.

9) Quarters and dollar bills -- There will be some rides that will not allow you to bring your bag on with you, but typically lockers are provided. You'll need some loose change to take advantage of this convenience.

10) A good night's sleep -- No, you can't pack this one and take it with you. Unless, of course, you prefer a grande latte with a triple shot of espresso to a nap. Get some rest, you'll need your energy for the adventures Orlando has is store for you.

Top 10 Tips for Visiting the Springs

  1. Go all-in. Dipping one toe in at a time is a loosing bet. Our northern friends might think this water is a warm tepid pool, but to us thin-blooded Floridians it's going to feel ice cold. Just for a moment though. Once you get your whole body into the water, it feels refreshing.

  2. Bring bug-repellent. I went au naturale without any sunscreen or bug repellent. And at the end of the day I thought, "hey, I didn't get a burn!" But I did get bit.

  3. Guard your picnic from intelligent hungry creatures such as raccoons, squirrels and bears. They may look cute, but don't be tempted.

  4. Pack a large blanket for lounging and napping under the trees. Also a good brain-candy kind of book or magazine. Happy napping!

  5. Pack a picnic basket full of snacks. My personal favorite is frozen grapes because they're a light and healthy refreshing treat.

  6. Bring plenty of bottled water, but leave your flask at home. Yes, yes, I know. How can you have a picnic without a good bottle of wine. Well folks, in the State Parks its against the law. So if you must have your vino ... don't get caught with it.

  7. During the summer, most parks are open until 8:00 p.m. So, make a whole day of it, and expand that picnic basket to a barbecue. Most of the springs have grills ready to go. Just remember to bring all of the appropriate accoutrements such as coal, tin foil, tongs and your favorite sauce.

  8. If you go to Kelly Park/Rock Springs, rent a tough tire tube from Rock Springs Bar & Grill. I've tried the store-bought floating tubes and rafts and they're just not as strong and buoyant. Plus, there are "rocks" at rock springs and they could tear easily. Plus, save your breath from having to blow them up.

  9. Wear water shoes such as Crocs, Keens or any type of diving slipper. The floor of the springs are usually rocky and uneven. This will help protect your feet and keep you standing up instead of sliding down.

  10. Don't forget to take your cell phone out of your pocket. Trust me on this one.
