The Bowersock Gallery will open its 2012/13 season with a big shebang: “The Southern Stable,” a show that offers everything but the kitchen sink – and maybe one of those.

“The Southern Stable” opens Friday, November  9th , with an artist reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and runs through December 11, at The Bowersock Gallery, 137 East 4th Avenue Mount Dora.

The exhibit will feature new works by three of Bowersock’s longtime artists, will introduce two new painters, and offer works by more than two dozen additional artists.

All five featured artists offer accomplished, distinct hands, with a decidedly modern touch. From the juicy, rich canvases of watercolorist Dustan Knight, a groundbreaking artist in watercolor technique, and the bold stark objects front and center in the paintings of Donna Baldassari, each artist creates beautiful imagery with deep undertones.

Cindy Rizza’s work ranges from realist to photo realist. Never satisfied with simulacrum, Rizza’s work nudges, evokes memories, and leaves the viewer with questions. Jayne Adams scenes of simple, daily tasks express the nobility and richness of life and suggest a deeper self. Caroline Rufo creates labyrinthine settings with simplified forms, often treated with muted jewel tones, and always with intent.

The Bowersock stable, comprised of some of the east coast’s finest established and emerging artists, is equally broad. It ranges from Florida’s Carol Roll, creator of tiny, mischievous, mache people found in national magazines, to fellow Floridian abstract representational Michael Palmer, who interprets the state and its people with heart, warmth, humor and individual vision.

The range in style represented by the gallery includes photo realists, abstract, surreal, representational, reductive, dreamscape expressionist, impressionist, color-field and experimental. Most mediums are represented, including oil, acrylic, graphite, watercolor, mache, bronze, stone, metals, mixed media, forton, and multiple clays.

“What we’ve looked for over the past 10 years curating our galleries is excellence. We have artists working in the tradition of the Boston School, the Romantic era, classical and with thoroughly modern, distinct hands,” says Steve Bowersock, curator and co owner. “The gallery not only wants those top in their craft, that have control of their medium, but that demonstrate a voice that bring something to the viewer, that engages for a lifetime.

“Art is much more than an image occupying space over the couch, or a knickknack filling space on an end table. It is a conversation between artist and viewer, and the viewer with themselves.”

Many Bowersock artists have exhibited in shows throughout the US and the world, shown in museum or have works in of major corporate and museum collections.

The Mount Dora gallery is the second location for Bowersock and partner Michael Sanger. The original location in Provincetown Mass., is celebrating its tenth year. Bowersock represents 30 east coast artists from Maine to Florida.

The Bowersock Gallery will officially open its doors January 6 with a Grand Opening and Exhibition, “Recounting Narratives,” an exhibit of paintings by Meghan Howland, one of “New England’s brightest rising stars,” with a Florida connection.

“We got a call from a longtime arts journalist that caught Meghan’s first New Hampshire exhibition. She was astounded by the twenty-something’s skill and vision, reporting it as equal to a mature, established artist,” says Steve Bowersock, curator and co owner with Michael Senger. “We made our trip up to New Hampshire, took one look and signed her that day. Meghan truly is a standout painter.”

Howland, who currently lives in Maine with family from Florida, is a contemporary, representational painter, working in oils. Her work is marked by a dreamlike quality with dissonant notes.

“As we note in her biography, ‘the question of whether something is safe or dangerous, loving or hateful, is often unexplained in her work,’” says Bowersock. “’While conveying a situation or mood that is slightly ambiguous, this makes it up to the viewer to resolve what is happening, creating an unending range of emotions and possibilities.’”

The Bowersock Gallery is located at 137 East Fourth Avenue in Mount Dora. It is the company’s second location; the Bowersock gallery is celebrating its eighth year in Provincetown Mass. It represents over 28 artists, New Hampshire, Maine, and east coast artists, from the traditionally art-rich seacoast area.

Express your vision and develop your own artistic style with the limitless possibilities of mixed media. Combine and alter, everday paper and objects, natural aterials, and paint to create unique, one of a kind, representational and abstract artwork. We will discuss getting ideas, the selection and use of materials, color, texture, and patterns, composition and how to bring these elements together in a coherent way. We will view several artists work to illustrate the varied and individual results.

The class will offer hands-on learning and exersises on preparing backgrounds, composition layout, several "magic" techniques for altering everday papers, applying the materials, combining paint and, lastly, some toning and finishing methods to unify and complete a work. Individual attention will be given wherever possible and the student should be able to complete several pieces.

Supply List

Surfaces: 4-6 total. Canvas board, illustration board, heavy watercolor paper (your choice or a combination) Suggested sizes; 6x9, 9x12, 12x12.

A few practice sheets for experimentation.

Brushes: A 1" flat and a few of your favorites

Paint: 2 oz. or larger Golden or Liquitex Fluid Acrylics, include Titanium White or Titan Buff, Black, and a few others in transparent hues.

A small selection of craft acrylics (good for more opaque colors)

Additional: Matte medium, gesso, soft gel

3 or 4 Caran d'Ache Neocolor II water color soluble crayons (I love light blue, orange, red 7500.070 and black)

Paint palette, water bucket, Viva paper towels, at least a 12" ruler, pencil, scissors, old credit card

4 or 5 sheets of tracing paper

White tissue paper

An assortment of rice, handmade textured papers, and used dried tea bags

Enlarged photo copies of your favorite photo image (eg. I photocopied my image of African women to use along with handblocked fabric

scraps found on the ground in Ghana to use in a 12 x 12 piece...Images were enlarged to about 8 1/2" in order to fill the space nicely)

National Geographics, 1990's work best

Visual ideas to work with: birds, animals, people, flowers, leaves,etc....whatever interests you.

Misc. stash: Found papers, rusted metals, ephemera, magazines, old books, foreign text, old postage stamps, print origami paper, foreign paper money,

old letters. This list can go on and on. You'll find that the more you work in mixed media, the more you accumulate.

"road ditch " finds are already weathered and have a patina hard to achieve...corrugated cardboard, wrappers, genuine rubble. One can always

throw it out later.

Come play in beeswax! Encaustic Workshop

Join us in this extravaganza in beeswax!  Experience the joy and versatility of this rich, organic medium as Patricia teaches you the core encaustic techniques such as collage, image transfer and incising so that you will be primed to build on these with all of the endless possibility in the medium.

The diversity of this medium offers the artist opportunity to include all mediums and build on skills related to other creative outlets like no other medium can. You will want to be doing everything encaustic! Delving into alternative foundations and materials like plaster, tar, woodicing, PanPastel and alcohol inks and shellac will happen as well~

Demonstration and hands on painting and experimenting is what this workshop is all about.  With amply time to play in the wax, ask questions and develop a strong sense on what is possible in the medium, no one will go away without a fever for encaustic!  

Supply list 

While the main body of encaustic painting is based on beeswax, much can go into it!  I will supply the wax, encaustic colors and the heating materials for use with encaustic so that you do not have to be concerned with investing in materials before you know what it’s all about!  I also bring a small selection of collage materials and carving tools but you will have to bring your personality as well! That is, collect collage material, interesting carving tools or objects to press into the wax that will leave an interesting impression, image or photo transfers and what ever other ephemera you want to throw into the wax! 

($10.00 supply fee/day) 

Supplies to bring:

Surfaces to paint on-encaustic needs a rigid and absorbent surface- encausticbord or unprimed, birch art panels or plywood is recommended-no larger than 8x10 (6-10 total)

Paper towel

Wax paper for wrapping completed painting for transportation

Latex or rubber gloves 

Things to bring to personalize if you have them! Class materials for these will be available otherwise~

Carving tools

Razor blades, scrapers, palette knives, pottery tools, cookie cutters-any metal that will cut into or carve the wax

Fusing allows and encourages freedom in designing quilts. In this two day class, students will learn fusing basics and beyond to become competent and happy fusers. Strip fusing, collage building, weaving, layering and the use of decorative blades are just a few of the techniques students will explore in this fun and liberating class.

Day one – Little Landscapes: Using Frieda’s pattern Sister Trees; students will explore the possibilities of working from a design and making it their own.

Day two – Laughing Leaves; Starting with a color scheme of their choice, students will discover how to create free form a theme from nature or an abstract design.

Fabric kit available for each class $24 ea. Consisting of 1 yard total of Frieda’s hand dyed fabrics.

Other fabrics and decorative blades will be available for sale.

Pat Kinkade Heritage Tour Comes to Thomas Kinkade Gallery - Patrick’s Fine Art

Mount Dora, Florida – Thomas Kinkade collectors can learn more about him and his art than ever before.  Pat Kinkade, author, Kinkade Archivist, and brother of Thomas Kinkade, will be the focus of an event hosted by the Thomas Kinkade Patrick’s Fine Art Gallery, located at 352 Alexander Street, Mount Dora, Florida on March 6^th & 7^th, 2010. 

The Pat Kinkade Heritage Tour offers collectors a unique glimpse into Thomas Kinkade’s life, told through rare and exciting stories of Thom’s childhood by his younger brother.  Pat will present memorabilia of Thom’s that collectors will have the opportunity to purchase during the event. MOUNT DORA: Local Umatilla artist, Lynn Herrick will be exhibiting over 30 of her oil

paintings from Dec. 29^th to Jan. 30th at the W. T. Bland Library in Mt. Dora.

Herrick’s work has evolved from charcoals, acrylics, photography, pottery, basketry, fused glass

and, finally, to oils.  She has studied these various mediums in Miami, Hendersonville (NC), and
Ocala.  She now paints in the traditional Highwaymen style having studied with R. L. Lewis, Jr.,
one of the original Highwaymen, for the past four years.  Lynn has lived in Florida for over 50

years and feels that the Florida she captures on her canvases is disappearing exponentially with

rampant “development.”  She is dedicated to preserving this vanishing landscape in her own

artistic way.

Herrick’s “Vanishing Florida” series will be exhibited in the Community Room of the library

during regular hours. Please note that our Community Room is heavily used and may not always

MOUNT DORA, FL:  Florida’s historic artists, known as The Florida Highwaymen, will be returning to picturesque Mount Dora for the 4^th HIGHWAYMEN ART Show and Sale, January 8 & 9, 2010.

On Saturday, January 9^th, the popular Highwaymen artists will display and sell their art work from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Inside and Outside of the Donnelly Building in Donnelly Park, located in the center of Mount Dora.  Visitors can enjoy the scenic renderings of Florida’s landscape expressed in the Classic Highwaymen art style.  Participating in this event will be original Highwaymen Mary Ann Carroll, the only female in the group, Al Black, James Gibson, Isaac Knight, Robert Lewis and Roy McLendon… with OTHERS to be announced soon.  Admission, as before, is FREE!!

Friday, January 8^th, the evening prior to the Main Saturday event, the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce will host a ‘Meet and Greet’ the Artists between 6 and 8 p.m. at the Chamber’s Historic Train Station. Many vintage Highwaymen paintings will be on exhibit. Refreshments and light appetizers will be served. Admission is FREE… and ALL are invited to attend!!

2010 is also Mount Dora’s Centennial. After the GALA New Year’s weekend begins the Year Long Celebration… the Highwaymen Event will continue the festivities the following weekend!!

In the 1950s, the Highwaymen artists were a group of young black men from the Fort Pierce area. The late Alfred Hair and the late Harold Newton were considered the leaders of the group, studying under Backus and bringing their new-found talent back to the group.  The art work, painted on an inexpensive construction material known as upson board, displayed traditional Florida scenes of palm trees, royal poinciana trees, and river vistas.  From there, the artists would travel with their paintings along U.S. 1 and other Florida roadways, selling them from the trunks of their cars.  It wasn’t until the 1990s that the group was labeled The Highwaymen.
