Pure Aveda Salonspa in Mount Dora Donates Hair to Clean Oil Spill
Pure Aveda Salonspa in Mount Dora, Florida shipped 70 pounds of hair clippings to the Gulf Coast the in first wave of donations being received to help with the BP Oil Spill cleanup.
Matter of Trust, an environmental non-profit, is helping clean up oil spills by reusing donated hair clippings from hair salons, barber shops, pet groomers, and wool farmers. Stuffing this donated hair into donated nylon stockings, this organization creates highly absorbent booms that can protect beaches and white sands from oil spills. A pound of hair can absorb one quart of oil in one minute, and hair mats can be wrung out and reused up to 100 times.Michele and Ric Wilson, owners of Pure Aveda Salonspa said, “ As a FAB PRO Green Conscious Certified business, partnering with Matter of Trust is a natural solution for us to re-purpose hair clippings, and a safe, non-toxic, and effective way to participate in the Gulf Spill cleanup. Our salon guests love knowing that their hair is doing something to help”.
Donors from every state in the US, from Canada and beyond are sending in hair, fur and wool clippings as well as nylons and funding for outer mesh. Boom B Q's (boom making parties) are cropping up all over the Gulf and now in other states as well. The booms will be stored in donated temporary warehouse spaces all up and down the Gulf Coast. If BP and UNIFIED COMMAND need more boom, the Gulf Coast residents, and the donors from all over, will have provided an unprecedented support, supply of materials and volunteer hours, for their assistance!Pure Aveda Salonspa will continue to collect hair clippings for a second wave of donations and has also set up a nylons donation point at its location in downtown Mount Dora. The community is encouraged to participate by going to get a haircut and bringing along a pair of used, clean pantyhose with you for donation (runs are okay). Pure Aveda Salonspa is located at 206 West Fifth Avenue in Mount Dora. (352) 383-9091. www.pureaveda.com

Family Earth Day at the Lib
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Stephanie Haimes

DATE: April 22, 2010
SUBJECT: Family Earth Day @ the Library
MOUNT DORA: While the adults are painting their rain barrels, the children and of course their parents or grandparents are invited to the front lawn of the library to enjoy crafts and learn that being green is fun and easy. There will even be face painting All events are free.
On Thursday, April 22 Earth day turns 40. But how did Earth Day begin and why do we need an Earth Day. Earth Day is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. U. S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin announced his idea for a nationwide teach-in day on the environment in a speech to a fledgling conservation group in Seattle in September of 1969. On April 22, 1970, Earth Day marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement. It proved popular in the United States and around the world. The first Earth Day had participants and celebrants in two thousand colleges and universities, roughly ten thousand primary and secondary schools, and hundreds of communities across the United States. Senator Nelson stated that Earth Day “worked” because of the response at the grassroots level.
The Family Earth Day will be held at the W. T. Bland Public Library located at 1995 N.
Donnelly Street in Mount Dora. All Library programs are free and open to the public. For

Mount Dora Village Merchants & Business Association, Inc. and the Season of Giving!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Group Gives Back To Mount Dora
While the New Year celebrations have already begun to fade into our memories, some feel the celebrations are just beginning in Mount Dora. This year (2010) Mount Dora is celebrating its 100th anniversary as a city.
One group has a 15-year tradition of giving back to the community - and is stepping up to the plate again in 2010. The Mount Dora Village Merchants & Business Association kicked off the 100th celebration in style hosting the first ever New Year's eve party in Mount Dora's town square, Donnelly Park.
In December the Association spent nearly $35,000 to enhance Mount Dora's holiday celebrations, which included not only the New Year's Eve celebration, but paying for the wreaths and lights on the poles throughout downtown, sponsoring the popular Christmas walk and promoting the Christmas events of other groups in town. All these holiday traditions that are favorites of residents and visitors alike are provided by the Merchants Association, according to Ana Tuttle, their treasurer.
"Many people may not be familiar with our non-profit group. Our members, all volunteers, are business owners in Mount Dora who have joined together," Leigh Love, President of the Association said.
The mission of this group is to promote Mount Dora with a focus on its historical business district. "Maintaining a vibrant downtown not only helps our businesses, it helps our community hold its value and appeal," explained Brian Young, the Association's secretary. "Without our historic downtown we are just another city."
The Merchants Association will continue to give back to the community in 2010 by sponsoring many events including the upcoming Spring Collectibles & Crafts Show, the 2010 Mount Dora Craft Fair and the 2010 Christmas Walk. "In these tough economic times, when the city government and other organization's budgets have become severely constrained, and thanks to our successful events, we continue be one of the few with the resources to advertise and promote Mount Dora as a community," Terry Abbott, promotion and events chair, explained.
